* Updates..

My photo website has been updated to support the new ipad — so if you have one of this seasons most-wanted e-gadgets you can, if you want — when not riding your bike, geek out looking at other people riding their bikes.

I’ve just added a tumblr feed link to my website as well. I haven’t been ‘feeling’ the blog lately but I always have pictures that don’t fit neatly into a category that I’d like somewhere to post and I think tumblr will work nicely. My feed is called “the joe sales” which is what Portland cyclocross promotor and impresario Brad Ross has taken to calling me.  The plan is to post a pic a day, unless I post more or less.   Probably more but it could just as easily  be less. I can actually post from my name-brand phone which is cool because I take thousands of pictures on that thing and I never know what to do with them.

I’ve linked it to twitter so if you are into that kinda thing you can follow my tumbler at twitter while on the …… My twitter feed goes by the name  JoeySales (my Canadian name, lolz as the kids say) because there appears to be high demand for “Joe Sales.”  My name was also taken at tumbler and at myname.com  which is why I’m at .ca and .net and “thejoesales.”

It all sounds rather confusing but my photo page, my lame ass blog, my even lamer twitter feed and my tumblr are all linked in some way or another so if you find one you should be able to find the other.  And the two guys guys that look at my website, to you I say if you cant find what you are looking for just call me and we’ll sort it out. I love you guys.

Another thing,  I’m going to drastically edit my website in the next coming month – I’m going to trim the galleries way down, re-arrange the organization and themes and – gasp – add non-biking pictures.  It was bound to happen.

* The Portrait

At the end of the 2010  Hoogerheide Cyclocross World Cup while walking down  the main street through town (not part of the course this year) I spotted this picture in a shopkeepers window.   It made me think about how trendy and foolish photographers can be — especially when it comes to portraits. I wonder what this will look like to the subject in 20 years?  How long does it take for a bad idea to seem good  when it comes to fashion?  Or does bad just come back as badder with a sense of humor?  It seems somewhat popular right now to try and appear as “ironic” as possible in certain circles  (hint: one gear and a moustache) but with dozens of your best friends  sporting the exact same ‘ironic” look it seems like the joke may have come full circle.  If you really want to be ironic and self-deprecating try this look on for size:

* The End of Fishing in America.

It’s sad but true.  I just found out about it and thought I would help spread the word. To my American friends who are devastated to find out about the end of fishing in America I personally invite you to come up to Canada for all your fishing adventures.

It’s amazing what a couple of students and a video camera can uncover.

* The Sledge Warriors

In the last decade the IOC co-joined the para-Olympics with The Olympics. What that means is that after the Vancouver Olympic’s “it’s a Canadian thing” closing ceremonies ended, the sports just started all over again. I had never witnessed any para-sports before but I’m really glad I got a chance to see the wonder that is sledge hockey. Sports is sports and these guys battled so hard it was breathtaking, intense and completely fun to watch. I have no idea how these athletes shoot the puck so hard — during the game you get to hear that sweet perfect melodiuos note of a puck “tinging” off a post. It’s both the best and the worst sound in all of hockey for both fans and players alike and honestly, I didn’t expect to hear that sound in sledge hockey but the the minute I did I knew I was watching a great sport. If you like to bitch and moan about over-paid spoiled pro-athletes (who doesn’t ?) but you still love pure sport then maybe sledge is your game. Just sticks, pucks, blades and a lot of intensity fighting for pride and honour and medals.

* Mullet Part Deux

Posted on February 21st, 2010 by Joe Sales. Filed under Uncategorized.

Granville Island has been a zoo ever since the 5 ring circus rolled into town. Yesterday on my way downtown I went through the throngs and I’m glad I did because I spotted this mint condition LeCar being driven by a dude sporting an Olympic Record Mullet. It’s a fun time to be downtown Vancouver for the 2010 Spring Olympics.

* The Flame of Wayne

Posted on February 13th, 2010 by Joe Sales. Filed under Uncategorized.

In pure Canadian fashion the final carrier 2010 Olympic torch was a hockey player standing in the back of a pick-up truck. Few knew the final location of the so-called “cauldron” but when Wayne finally lit the torch the secret was out and thousands flocked downtown to see The Flame of Wayne.

But they really couldn’t because Wayne’s flame is behind security fencing that is wrapped in 2010 banners. I found a spot where some kids had ripped off the fabric so they could look in through the chain-link fencing. I hope this isn’t the chain-link Olympics, maybe the fence will eventually come down. I’m heading back downtown to try to find the first bar selling a “Flaming Wayne” drink — details to follow.

* X Marks The Spot.

In a few short hours the opening ceremony starts and the 2010 Olympic games will begin but the Olympic sized party started days ago here in Vancouver. Many of the venues were still putting frantic final touches on their sites in the last few days but the overall buzz and adrenaline throughout the city is palpable. People are just plain excited. There are still some who feel it is all totally un-cool, and some who are really angry about the Olympics but as a good friend said the other night; despite how you feel about the Olympics and wether you enjoy them or not we are all going to have a long hangover after the games and the party has started so there is no point in holding back now. You could hate snow and coke and there is still so much to do here in Vancouver right now from large scale public art projects to awesome free parties that most everyone can see or hear something new and interesting. Even all the downtown bars have been granted extended hours liquor licenses to this usually sleepy and boring city.
